New to site, but not Ft. Sill, looking for friends... - 6 days ago by Shutterbug - Reply

Hi! I have a little boy about the same age as yours. He is almost 4. I also have two older kids, who are 9 and 10...a boy and a girl. I am originally from Oklahoma, too, but from all over basically. I grew up in Canute and Frederick, mostly, so western Oklahoma is what I'm used to.

I honestly don't know about Ocean dental. I know Dr. Michael Jackson takes our dental insurance, and that he is good. He also does dental for kids.

Do you live on or off post? We live on, and find it's kind of hard at times to make friends. I'm hoping to start doing a playdate or something every week to have where the moms can talk, and the kids can play. I don't have much along the way of kids toys for outdoors, but I'm just a few blocks from a playground, and we have a ton of indoor toys for kids to play with.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, Shutterbug we don't plan on moving to Lawton. I've been using a sex offender website...way to many in Lawton for me to feel comfortable living there!

I live off of 67th street and I love it out this way. I dont have any school age kids, well college, but not younger so I can't comment on the schools in my area.

New to site, but not Ft. Sill, looking for friends... - 8 days ago by Christy86 - Reply

Hello. We have been stationed here since March of 2009. We came from our first duty staion, which was Hawaii, but both my husband and I are originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ft. Sill is nothing like I pictured it to be. I absolutely hate it here to be honest. For some reason, no matter how hard I try, I can not make friends here. They either move away right after I meet someone cool or they are really rude and ONLY want to hang out when it is convenient for them. We got orders to leave here, but they got stopped for another year because my husband's unit is deploying and he gets to go with them, eh! Anyways, I have 2 boys ages 3 and 4 and would love to meet new people if anyone has any ideas on how to make friends here, or if anyone is interested in being a friend.
Also does anyone know if Ocean dental take Tricare? They seem to be the only decent children's dentist from what I have researched. I know I can call and ask, but it is Friday night, so I have to wait.

Here! Well I am not sure how "old fashioned" I am, but I definitely like drama free! I have lived here for 3 years and have yet to made friends. (well ones that didn't leave right after I met them anyways.)I don't like gossiping or even talking about anyone behind their back. I also love to help others out and receive help from time to time. Although haven't had any help since moving here. I am originally from Tulsa,Oklahoma and Lawton is NO where near what I pictured it to be. It doesn't help that we moved here from Hawaii and people were actually great there.

I am originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and thought I would like it here. I absolutely hate it here! We have lived here for a little over 3 years and I have yet to find friends here. If you want to live anywhere, the East side of Lawton out of the city, is the best spot in my opinion. That is where we live and our house is going on the market and we plan on staying on the East side. There is never any crime here and we live next to several police officers, including the sheriff. The high school on the East side is Macarthur high and it is a GREAT school, as well as the middle and elementary school. As far as church, we have only been to one and that is First Baptist East, which is right down the street from us and they seem like an ok church, but I am not really into organized religion and they like to hold signs next to the highway such as abortion is murder and things like that. I just don't agree that Christians should be judgemental and should be holding signs telling people what they should and shouldn't be doing. In my opinion what you do is between you and the Lord and only the Lord, but other than that, it is a great church. There are several to choose from though and most of them have websites for you to explore before you go. As shutterbug said, if you are open minded and like the wilderness, you can find things to do with kids. Our thing is camping, swimming, fishing, or leaving Lawton! lol OKC, Tulsa (which is a little further), and Wichita Falls are the places to go. Although every time I have been to the OKC zoo, it sucked and we never really seen any animals and it was pact with rude people. If you don't mind a 2 1/2 hour drive, I would make the trip to the Tulsa zoo, which is WAY better! There is also a mall in Lawton, but it is just really small. Good luck, I hope you like it here more than me!

I am originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, so I thought living here would be awesome....well not so much. It sucks here. I have lived here a little over 3 years and have yet to find any friends here. People are rude here and seem to only care about themselves. If you want any friends, you basically have to go by their schedules.....they don't care about your's! I highly recommend living on the far East side of Lawton! That is where we live and there has not been any crime around here since we moved here. We also live by a few police officers and we actually live a few houses down from the sheriff. Plus, we are by Macarthur high school, which is a GREAT school, and so is the middle and elementary school in this area too. I would definitely stay away from living in the middle of the city for sure! Try to live on the outskirts of town! I personally hate it here and the only good you can find here is if you get out of town! lol I have even found myself calling Lawton, Rotten as its nickname because it sucks here so much.

I highly recommend the East side of Lawton. There are a few houses for sale/rent around the area. We live in this area and there is no crime over here and we also live by a lot of police officers even a sheriff is right down the street from us. Macarthur is the high school on the East side and it is an AWESOME school, as well as the middle and elementary schools in the neighborhood. We are moving out of our house since it is being put on the market, but we plan on living in the same area because this is probably the best part of Lawton to live in. I would definitely stay away from the city of Lawton and try to live on the outskirts of it.

I recommend moving to a different town, then, unless you want to spend a hefty lump of money for a house. Most of the good neighborhoods are where the newer housing is built, and they are expensive. You might find something better close to post in the Medicine Park area or Elgin. They are not too far from Sill. Lately, there have been bad things happening in a lot of different areas here in Lawton.

Moving to Fort Sill this summer - 9 days ago by MAM1979 - Reply

So were moving out there this summer and are looking to buy a house out in town. Any areas to stay away from? Or any areas that you like? I have 4 kids, so Im looking for a safe neighborhood with good schools! Thanks!

I think it's about a 10-15 minute drive to post, if that. It isn't too far. I know a lot of people would rather live in that area than in Lawton. The school there is good, too, from what I have heard.

Thanks Shelly. I checked out the ahrn website, but can't tell which are on the good side of town. I'm goimg to go on google maps to see if I can tell.
Shutterbug, We are coming from the Grafenwoehr /Vilseck area of Germany. We love it here and don't really want to leave. But we were not approved to stay any longer.
I was wondering how far Elgin is from post? I have heard it's a good area, but if it is too far of a drive than we won't look there. I've just heard that the schools are great there. Thanks again everyone!

family of 6 moving to Ft. Sill from Germany - 31 days ago by Shutterbug - Reply

There are good and bad things about the town, and if you like warm (okay...hot) summers, cold winters, and pretty calm in-between, then it's good. Some of the schools aren't too bad, but I heard Eisenhower isn't the best for high school. I've heard others who like it, though, so it varies, just like every school. My daughter goes to Pat Henry Elementary until next year (moving on up to middle school!), and my sister works as a teacher there for 1st grade. It's a pretty good school, but smack dab in the bad part of town.

What part of Germany are you coming from? We lived in Heidelberg for a few years, and I loved it! I wish we could go back, but my husband is probably going to be getting out of the military before time to pcs again, and I heard they are trying to stop doing accompanied tours over there. I hope that after my kids are grown, that my husband and I can take a vacation over there, and go to Italy and France, too.

I found my rental home on ahrn.com website. If you find one on there or anywhere else, you can ask us here what our thoughts on the area you find something in.

You may be able to get right onto post though depending on what your eligible for and their waiting time.

Either way, welcome, let us know if we can help you with anything.

I dont have any school info as my kids are grown but as far as Lawton, I honestly like it here. It's not too big and not too small. As with any town, there are good areas and not so good areas. There is a lot to do here, but if you dont find enough in Lawton area, Oklahoma City is north about an hour and Wichita Falls is about an hour south.

It gets HOT here during the summer though, so you will want to have summer clothes handy for sure.

Welcome to Ft Sill/Lawton :)

Hello,

Well, I have heard good and bad about the area, but was wondering if it is really THAT bad as far as the town of Lawton goes? Which schools are good? I have 2 high school aged, and 2 elementary aged.
Any info would be very helpful!

Moving to Sill from Riley - 39 days ago by Shutterbug - Reply

There's actually quite a bit to do here with kids if you are open-minded. There are a lot of parks in the area, a wildlife refuge where you can drive through and see deer, elk, buffalo, and cattle. You can take picnics there, and there are a couple of lakes nearby.

Also, we are just about an hour away from Oklahoma City, and there is a water park there, as well as a zoo, big science center with IMAX, and an amusement park. There are a lot of museums here in the state, and the one near Elmer Thomas Park here in Lawton is free on Sundays for Comanche county residents.

There is a splash park and some playgrounds on post, and a museum. The library has story time on Wednesdays, and I believe another day, too. There are malls in Oklahoma City, and also Wichita Falls, which is about an hour to the south. We are about a 4 hour drive from Six Flags Over Texas.

Welcome Jennifer, and yeah it's kinda dusty in here, that's why I still post on Lewis Underground but check back here now and then.

We came from Lewis as well and honestly, I like it here better. This size town is more my speed, too many people and too much traffic in WA for me, although I did like the climate for the most part there. It gets HOT in summer here but we have AC so unlike WA we dont have to suffer lol

Moving to Sill from Riley - 40 days ago by Shelley S - Reply

We live off 67th and Cache area and we love it! cost of living here is about the same as Riley in my opinion. As with any town, there is good and bad. I will warn you, and it's mine and a few people I know opinion, if you look to rent off post stay away from Sundance. We walked in and asked a question and they were beyond rude so we said screw it and walked out. I found the house I rent on ahrn.com, but beware, some of sundance's places are on there too.

Welcome, we loved Riley, although we came from Washington state last. I really like it here personally :)

Thank you.
We'd prefer post, but as with any move it will depend on the wait :(
What is there to do with kids?

Moving to Sill from Riley - 41 days ago by Shutterbug - Reply

Hi and welcome!

Some of the housing on post isn't bad, but if you are wanting to live off post, I recommend living in Medicine Park, Elgin, or one of the surrounding towns. If you live in Lawton, the northwest part of town is supposed to be good, and some of the East side of town is alright from what I hear. There are a lot of areas to stay away from, too, though.

We went to First Baptist West here on Easter, and it seems like a nice church. We were going on post for a while, but my husband and I just didn't feel "at home" there.

Moving to Sill from Riley - 41 days ago by a3017914uu - Reply

Good morning ladies, we're getting ready to move there in 51days, but who's counting.. Lol

I'm from Cali and coming to the mid west was very different, tornados, high winds and the humidity.. It's slower here, but as I get older I'm ok with that.
Here's what I'd like to know: where is the best place to live?
I've heard so much bad stuff about Lawton: drugs, break in's, murders...
I have 2 children 1 going to 2nd and the other going to 4th.. What are good schools?
I've looked at the private schools
I'm also looking for a loving church home. I'm coming from FSBJC, theyre amazing.

If anyone can help that would be great.
Thank you, God bless

Hi Lady's, we are headin your way... - 44 days ago by Shutterbug - Reply

Hey Jennifer! Welcome to Oklahoma soon! We came here from Fort Lewis last August. I like it better here, but it's home for me. Some don't like it, and some do. Summers are beyond hot here, and winter can get cold and windy. I used to go to church at Central High Baptist. There are some good people in that area. It's about a 20-30 minute drive from Fort Sill, but it's worth it to live out in the country instead of in Lawton's city limits.

The board here is definitely nothing like LU. It's so quiet here you could hear a pin drop. However, at least there isn't a lot of drama like there used to always be on LU. I haven't even been on there in a while. If you are on Facebook, Fort Lewis Army Wives is a good group, and if you make crafts or anything, Mommy Wares is a good group in the area on FB.

If you want to go to a water park, you will have to drive to Wichita Falls or Oklahoma City, because the water park here in Lawton closed down. There are a few museums around, and the wildlife refuge up north of Lawton is pretty cool.

Hi there to all. I just want to know were are all the old fashion military wives that don't like drama that help each other out? Military wives that don't spread others personal life every were. Military wives that have a problem with someone they confront them face to face. That won't go extreme on the problem and tell lies to everyone. If you are a true friend to someone when you say you are i would like to be a friend to you. I a military wife as well and like to make true friends! Life is just to short to be wasting time on childish stuff. Sorry if i made someone made its wasn't meant to. I just miss having friends. Were i come from people stuck up for eachother and didn't do them wrong or talk about them and if the other person told them something they kept it to their self. Thanks so much for your time
